The Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud was the core model of the Rolls-Royce Motor Cars range from April 1955 until March 1966. It replaced the Silver Dawn and was, in turn, replaced by the Silver Shadow. The chassis has a simple steel box section, welded together and very rigid. Construction retained the traditional split between chassis and body, which facilitates the provision of special bodied versions though in practice the overwhelming majority of cars were delivered with the standard steel body shell. Produced by Pressed Steel, and employing light weight aluminium based alloy for the doors, bonnet/hood and boot/trunk lid this was state of the art in 1959. The car is 212 in long,75 in wide, and massed 1.95 tonnes. The engine is a 155 hp / 4000 rpm 4.9 L six-cylinder unit with inlet over exhaust valves: twin SU carburettors were added in September 1957. The standard transmission is a four-speed automatic. Brakes were hydraulic and assisted by the Rolls-Royce mechanical servo with 11 in (279.4 mm) drums and suspension was independent coils at the front and semi-elliptic springs at the rear. Twin brake master cylinders were incorporated from April 1956. Power steering became an option in 1956 along with air conditioning. A long wheel base version, lengthened by 4 in (101.6 mm), was also made available in September 1957, outwardly very similar to the existing car, but offering improved leg space for rear seat passengers. (CLICK ON ANY OF THE PICTURES OF THIS MAGNIFICIENT ROLLS ROYCE CLASSIC AND IT WILL SHOW LARGER IN THE TOP VIEW BOX) The British Motor magazine tested a standard wheel base factory bodied Series I in 1956 recording a top speed of 102.9 mph (165.6 km/h) and acceleration from 0-60 mph (97 km/h) in 13.5 seconds and a fuel consumption of 14.5 miles per imperial gallon (19.5 L/100 km; 12.1 mpg-US). The test car cost $5,078 including taxes. The 1940s saw the opening of Rolls-Royce's celebrated Crewe factory. The first Rolls to be produced postwar was the Silver Wraith. This vehicle was significant in that it was the last Rolls-Royce product to have its body crafted by an independent coachbuilder. After this point, the company's vehicles were built completely in-house. Rolls unveiled its Phantom IV in 1950. Powered by a muscular eight-cylinder engine, the majestic cruiser held the distinction of being the most exclusive Rolls ever. Only 18 were made, all of which were delivered to royalty and heads of state. The '50s also saw the debut of the king-sized Silver Cloud I and Silver Cloud II. The 1960s saw the introduction of the Silver Cloud III, Silver Shadow and Phantom VI. The company hit a rough patch in the early 1970s. Problems with an engine contract led to severe financial difficulties, which in turn caused the manufacturer to file for bankruptcy. The company was eventually nationalized by the British government. In 1980, Rolls was purchased by Vickers PLC. The Rolls-Royce Silver Spirit was launched in 1981; the car was the first of a new generation of Rolls vehicles. Mechanically, the Silver Spirit was designed to meet strict new international safety and emissions regulations. Aesthetically, the car was styled to appeal to a younger generation of buyers, with a clean new look that was very much in step with the times. Rolls changed hands yet again in the '90s. Vickers put the marque up for sale, and BMW seemed like a front-runner to take the reins; however, in a surprise move, Volkswagen outbid BMW. The two German automakers arranged for VW to relinquish control of the Rolls-Royce name on January 1, 2003, with VW keeping Bentley and the Crewe plant. As a result, BMW has built a $100 million facility in Goodwood, England, to accommodate the distinguished British manufacturer. These days, the Rolls-Royce family of vehicles is comprised of a trio of majestic Phantoms — the sedan, coupe and Drophead (British for convertible) — as well as the smaller, "entry level" Ghost. While there are other automakers also offering cars at these rarefied price points, we don't doubt the company's ability to keep rolling for the foreseeable future.
